When the fall apple season rolls around there is nothing better than some smoked apple crisp for dessert. This is an easy recipe, we do it with a pre-packaged apple crisp and some freshly picked apples.
Smoked Apple Crisp Prep
I won’t reinvent the wheel to much on here when it comes to prep. I used some prepackaged apple crisp topping, Concord Fresh Success. I would recommend following the instructions on the package of what you bought. Before we dive into that, while preparing the apple crisp you can get the smoker started.
I did this recipe on my Weber Kettle and set it for a temperature of 300 and used, you guessed it some apple wood chips. While the smoker is getting going you can continue your prep. While following the directions, I used a cast iron skillet to smoke this apple crisp.
Your packaged ingredients may state this but the better apples to use for apple crisp and cooking are the following:
- Braeburn
- Cortland Empire
- Gala
- Golden Delicious
- Granny Smith
- Jonagold
Mix your packages ingredients and butter per the instructions. Set that off to the side. You will slice the apples in approximate 1/8’s, place in the cast iron skillet. You should spray the skillet with some cooking spray or a little bit of butter. After adding the apple crisp topping to the apples we will get ready to place it on the smoker.
Smoking Apple Crisp
Now that you have the apple crisp together, you can place it on the smoker. We are going to smoke it at 300 for about 60 minutes or until the apples are tender. We slow this down a little bit to ensure we can get some apple smoke flavor on this apple crisp.
Once your apples are tender, you can go ahead and pull this off and get it ready to serve. If you have had apple crisp before, you will know that it pairs great with some vanilla ice cream and/or some whipped cream.
This is a nice twist to a classic dessert. You will enjoy this any time during the year but especially during the fall and holiday season.
