Step by Step Camp Fire Steak

  • If the steak is frozen for travel purposes ensure it is fully thawed. A partially frozen steak could result in as that uneven cooking and a poor end result. For this recipe, I used a 1lb sirloin steak and it was about 1″ thick.
  • Season the steak with an SPG rub, both sides of the steak
  • Leave the steak out, covered, especially if out camping and allow to come up to “room temperature”. This will assist with a more even cook. Let it sit out for about 20 minutes.
  • If its not already going, get the camp fire up and running.
  • I used a grate over the fire. Depending on your set up, this may vary. I used this one, over our backyard fire pit but over a camp fire you might want something more along these lines.
  • When the fire is up and running, get your grate set up and throw the steak on. When setting up the grate and the steak, look for an area that will give you some indirect heat. Since the fire is a bite fluid and the heat may shift on you, don’t be afraid to move the steak around as needed. “Follow the heat” if you need to.
  • The timing on this is going to be contingent on how thick the steak is, that is why I mentioned the 1″ thick number earlier. For a medium rare finish, I grilled the steak for 6 minutes on each side.
  • When done, a quick reverse sear over the hottest part of the fire is next. I just did about 1 minute on each side, over direct and high heat.
  • When done, remove from the heat, let it rest for about 10 minutes. Keep it covered, especially if you are out in the woods camping.
  • After resting for a few minutes, start slicing away and serve while hot!

Camp Fire Steak

Get ready to impress your fellow campers with juicy, flavorful steak cooked over an open flame.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Rest Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sirloin steak
  • 1 tbsp SPG rub

Instructions

  1. Depending on your camping experience, make sure the steak is not frozen
  2. Season the steak with an SPG rub, both sides
  3. Let sit out and come to "room temperature" for about 20 minutes. If outdoors, ensure you keep it covered. If you are in high heat, I suggest keeping it out of the heat after 5-10 minutes
  4. Start your fire pit and set up your cooking grate
  5. Once the fire is up and running, set your grate and steak in an area that will give some indirect heat
  6. Since a camp fire and weather conditions might be fickle, move the steak around as needed
  7. For an approximate 1" steak, grill over indirect heat for about 6 minutes on each side
  8. When done, reverse sear for about 1 minute on each side, this will give you a medium rare steak
  9. Let rest for about 10 minutes, and again if outdoors, keep covered.
  10. After resting slice and serve

Notes

Feel free to use any cut of beef for this recipe. The one aspect of timing and how this is cook is the thickness of the steak. Keeping the steak in that approximate 1" in thickness will keep your timing in the general area of what I have stated in the recipe.
